June 10, 2019 - A three-minute short video on gun violence by 15-year-old student filmmaker Odessa Shlain Goldberg has been awarded the Troy Perry Award in the 2019 OUR PRIDE Video Fest competition. Set to the music of Rufus Wainwright's rendition of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, the video interweaves a rewritten version of the post-World War II poem “First They Came” by German theologian & Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller, with images from the aftermath of mass shootings. High Schooler's Film About Pulse and Other Shootings Will Move You to Tears
With the prevalence of mass shootings in the United States, 16-year-old high school student Odessa Shlain Goldberg says she no longer trusts people — strangers or otherwise — as much as she used to. They have affected her life in numerous ways, from shooting drills at school to an unshakeable fear in crowded places. It’s also what led her to her topic for the Our Pride Student Video Competition, for which she won first place. / GayStarNews.com News Story Here
